The Benefits of Cotbeds by Barry Waters

Cotbeds have so many benefits that we see them as a clear winner when it comes to choosing your baby's sleeping arrangements. As well as keeping your baby supremely safe cotbeds also help to ease that important transition from cot to bed. The conversion to a bed is achieved by simply removing the side panels of the cot so the disruption to your child is minimal. On top of this you will save money, space and be environmentally friendly.

Longer Lasting and Money Saving

  • One purchase in first 5-6 years: You do not need to purchase a separate moses basket, cot or toddler bed as cotbeds can fulfil all of these functions. *
  • No need to buy different bedding: When your child is ready to move from a cot to a bed you do not need to purchase a different mattress or bedding.
  • Long lasting: As a cotbed is both a cot and a toddler bed it is unlikely that you will need to upsize until your child is of school age.
  • Better for the environment: The Requirement for less furniture means less discarded furniture.

Designed for Safety

  • Different Mattress Base Positions: Newborns can start in the higher position and when they start to push up on their hands and knees you can lower the mattress position for additional safety.
  • Safety Teething Rails: Most cotbeds come fitted with these. They protect a baby's delicate teeth as well as preventing damage to the cot.
  • No Dangerous Cut Outs: Cotbeds do not have dangerous cut outs in the head or foot boards as these have proven to be dangerous for babies and toddlers
  • Spacing of Slats: Good quality cotbeds will not have slats that are more than 2 3/8 inches apart. This is an extremely important safety aspect.

Functional and Practical

  • Easy to Assemble: Good quality cotbeds should not present you with any DIY nightmares.
  • Dropsides Available: A number of cotbeds come with easy to operate dropsides for easy access to your baby. Most dropsides have a one-handed operation and are recommended if you have a bad back or may encounter problems reaching in and out of the cot.
  • Easy Conversion to Toddler Bed: This is generally as simple as removing the sides. Some cotbeds feature split ends to reduce the size of the end boards whilst others provide additional foot or head boards.

Space Saving

  • Less floor space is required: Cotbeds are considerably smaller than adult sized beds meaning that you can free up valuable floor space for much longer
Practical and Versatile, Cotbeds are quite simply a Good Investment

* It is important to note that the advice from fsid is that the safest place for your baby to sleep for their first six months is either in a crib or a cot in the same room as you. If it is not possible or practical to have a cotbed in your bedroom, or to always be with your baby whilst they are asleep in a cotbed then we  would advise that you also get a moses basket or crib for these first few months.
